First KAIZEN AuditAt the beginning of 2006, Umicore Galvanotechnik introduced a programme for the continuous improvement of working practices with "Improving the Good" as a motto, in German abbreviated KVP. The objective of this philosophy is to make work routines even more efficient. The basic ideas derive from the Japanese concept of "Kaizen" (change for the better), a method the automotive industry has been practising with very considerable success in improving product, process and service qualities. In small, always achievable steps, the employees themselves learn to see the wastefulness in work routines in their company and to initiate adequate measures for improvement. Throughout many years, the industry has proved that the introduction pays and that the motivation of the staff can be considerably increased by including them creatively. Umicore Galvanotechnik additionally rewards all improvements. Besides a certain sum the employees can use for a purpose within their department, a fixed share is donated to a good cause which the employees can select themselves. This creates a high degree of personal involvement and self-commitment of all employees. At Umicore, Kaizen stands for innovation, efficiency, satisfaction of customers and staff as well as joy in the workplace, it is also the basis for securing the location and for the "next best year". In December 2006, the first Kaizen audit took place at Umicore. An external adviser checked the first areas for the efficiency of the measures taken.
